Performing a job that requires winches to be utilized to complete the job is
a task that should be performed by professionals that are trained yearly, like
the operators at Mission Pass Towing. There a a lot of variables that
need to be looked at on each and every winching operation such as:
- Underwater recoveries are one of the most difficult types of recoveries to
perform. The main reason for this is that when an object is partially
submerged we now have to contend with the weight and movement of the water
that is in and around the object. If it is completely submerged you now have
to deal with the ground conditions that more than likely are silt, clay or
mud.
- Hillside and ditchside recoveries present more of a resistance than danger
to a recovery vehicle. If an object goes down a cliff or in a ditch then we
are now not only dealing with the resistance of the vehicle or the object that
needs to be retrieved but also an incline, the steeper the hill the more the
resistance to overcome with the use of multiple lines to load or adding snatch
blocks to change the direction of the pull.
- Walt's Mission Pass Towing has extra cable lengths besides what the tow
truck is equipped with. This is utilized in hillside and ditch type recoveries
where the tow truck can not park close enough to perform a safe recovery and
it is also utilized in change of direction or multiple line operations.
- Uprighting is one of the easier types of recoveries to be performed. The
only drawback of this type of operation is that you don't want to bring the
object up only for it to fall over the other way and create more damage to the
vehicle. Something else that needs to be paid attention to is where to connect
the cables and chain to on an overturned vehicle, truck or object without
causing more damage to it.
